Figureheads


No sooner  did I offer my services as a wood carver and sculptor to the captain of Half Moon than he began telling me about how the forelegs of her rampant lion figurehead often snagged the lines of her sprit sail when the ship was underway.  It was a project made to order!  Could I Re-carve the Red Lion to prevent its legs from catching the sail sheets?  SURE!

Here you see the forelegs extended above and then raised as though about to claw someone to the right.  This got his legs out of the way of the foresail sheets and safe from the danger of being broken while sailing in a gale.

Oh by the way, that fellow is roughly 60 pounds of solid mahogany!
