Woodcarving of a Mastodon in Mahogany with deer antler carved tusks.
This carving was auctioned for the benefit of the Museum Village, 1010 Route 17M, Monroe NY 10950.
The Museum Village houses a complete skeleton of a mastodon found locally some years ago and also is now home to the Mid Hudson Woodcarvers Guild where I am a member.
This carving is an estimate of what might have been a fairly young animal since the tusks have not yet grown out to cross one another. I also designed it with only minimal body hair to show the most probable body contours. It would possibly suggest it was one of those last ones to live when the climate had wormed near to when they became extinct. I mounted him walking on a field of rough ice and snow.
